Taking it all in

Northerly Island was planned and designed by architect Daniel H. Burnham. He had a vision of what the island should be and he saw it as a point at the northernmost end of a long stretch of little islands that were manmade. He wanted it to include lots of beaches, recreation areas, lagoons and harbors. He also wanted people to be able to drive along and have the chance to see a great sight: the Chicago skyline. He wanted Northerly Island to begin with trees and bushes, walkways and trails for people to follow. Burnham also wanted to include a parking lot for people who wanted to get out and enjoy nature along a walk and there was also the 12th Street Beach near here. In 1947, though, an airport opened up called Meigs Field and soon there was an air control tower being built. Finally, after a 50 year lease had expired on the airport, the Northerly Island opened to what it is today. Burnham’s dream of this beautiful and serene place was coming true. It now includes those trees, paths and views of the skyline that Burnham wanted so long ago.
