Planting the Seeds for Convention Creativity
After the completion of a large railroad exposition in 1948 and '49, Colonel Robert R. McCormick (former owner of the Chicago Tribune) recognized the city's need for a permanent exhibition hall. McCormick's influence eventually led to the creation of the Metropolitan Fair and Exposition Authority in 1955. The original McCormick Place Convention Center would later open its doors in 1960. This building was later destroyed by a fire in 1967. Architect Helmut Jahn was called in to help reconstruct a newer, larger convention center in 1971.
